Two of a gender is what he should be aiming for, espicially males... They get big enough to hold their own and wont breed together...

Yes but here the issue is trying to get them to sirvive the jack and not get killed... Makes have the best chance. Pairs could work as well, but they will fight to the death if they have fry involved. Males are good at toughing it out. I would try to make sure the JD is male as well...

The JD will start getting really pissy around the 4-5 inch mark, maybe earlier
