Whether you buy into it or not it can happen, and does happen, and still does in the wild. I've even had it happen to a flowerhorn with it's tankmate. Not to say it frequently happens, it doesn't, but if you want to be completely risk free of that (of which your odds are going up since you are using them as feeders) it is something to note. Since you have experience with blue gill, you should note their defensive reaction when you catch them is to stick up their spines, and furthermore the predator you are talking about is a bass which tend to have much larger mouths. Imagine spines and a smaller mouth fish, now it doesn't always turn out pretty. Just posting from experience.

k now i believe it b/c before it just seemed theoretical and i never read of any one having it happen to their fish. just figured that fish look for the eyes of their prey and attack that so that they eat it head first and the spines lay down flat but guess ur right :D

dont know much about convics as feeder but im from nh. And deffenitly have caught some big large mouth bass around the 20 inch mark that had large sunfish in there bullies so i can agree with that statement. And sun fish have some seriously hard spikey fins that will cut the hell out of your hand if not care full. Little warm steelers i hate sun fish lol

Fallen49er is correct 1m and 2f.

I breed 2 pairs in each 20 gallon long and have three 20Lg. I use home made acrylic dividers to split the pairs and every one does just fine and are all happy. Also the spines are not a problem unless the feeder is too big, and your fish will not die if it gets stuck for some time. You will see it first and can remove the feeder. This I know from experience.

it may be possible for a con's spine to hook itself in the mouth of a larger fish. If this happens, it's the owners fault though! Convicts make great feeder fish just pat attention! if the cons are too big for your fish to eat, don't put them in the tank.

+1 for dividers

two females man! get a 3some going! lol :p

Can 2 male and female convicts breed in a 25 gal and i was thinking about using the babies as feeders so what size should i use them to feed my 10 in flowerhorn?

Wait untill the fry are 1 month old, or quarter an inch.....Stuff the fry with abay brine shrimp......Try two female convicts...Ratio 2-1.....One male.......I know many situations when two females were bred in the same tank with one single male, at the same time..........
