Can 3 Red Breasted Sunfish live in a 75 Gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah - just going ahead and saying redbreast and pseed in a 29 is going to last a few months at best. They don't even have to be full grown, once they hit about 4 inches all hell is gonna break loose.
Had four 3" greenies and an orangespotted sunfish in a long 20.....every sunfish has been killed by that green sunfish. I read up that redbreast's dispositon is similar to the green sunfish...aggressive as heck.

my redbreast doesnt take **** from anyone, boss of the tank and quite aggressive. He was actually the one that killed my other species of leps. Even killed some bass and others

caught some more red breasts today, and now have a total of 3 of them in my 75 gal tank. 2 are males for sure but the 3rd looks like a possible female. Will they be fine in a 75 gallon? I have 2 pumpkinseed sunfish in there with them currently, is that too much for my tank? Red breasts are my favorite, so if i should remove some of the p.seeds to a diff tank i can.

Could you. Pm me pics of them if you don't mind I have a native tank and will be needing a few rebreasts and maybe you could get me a couple?

And no, I am not putting the pumpkinseed and the rebreast in the 29 anymore, I am actually going to do the exact thing this guy is doing-3 male rebreasts and 2 male pumpkinseed in a 75 gallon.

Good luck with that one.

I've never had a greenie kill or attack other sunfish, and I've kept them in various setups with various other species, so I wouldn't say that's standard. You can always end up with an aggressive one, but it doesn't mean they all are. They hang out in colonies with other sunfish in the wild, so they're used to being close together.
It shouldn't be an issue with plenty of territory and good water quality. Poor water quality will make sunfish fight because it makes them feel overcrowded. In the wild water quality becomes poor from overcrowding and/or when they're in an isolated pool that's evaporating, and they'll start trying to cull each other. That goes for a lot of other fish species too.

Pretty sure my big one coulda beat up anyone he wanted. Vid w/ him and a bass: http://s207.photobucket.com/albums/...ion=view&current=Bassngreeniemessinaround.mp4
