Can 6mm glass withstand 112 gallon water pressure ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My store bought cheap 10g has 6mm glass.
I can't believe someone with giant expensive fish would risk losing them to tank failure....and the fish breaking the glass isn't what you have to worry about...it's physics.
Build two tanks properly for now and save up for the other two to be built properly later.
If you are in such a hurry that you can't wait on proper glass/expense, you didn't plan right.

Yea you are right. I should plan again.

Don't even consider making it in 6mm glass! As already stated several times, it's nowhere strong enough for that volume of water. Do the sensible thing and use 10mm glass. ( I think you already know this but you're waiting for the one reply that tells you it will be OK)!

According to the chart I posted earlier he would be fine with 6mm if he dropped the height to 15" and was using glass with polished edges. I'm guessing polishing is out of the question so 9mm with regular cut edges would be fine @ 18 or 19". If he would drop the height to 12" then 6mm with normal edges should be fine. To do 20" high it looks like 12mm is necessary, but then you may as well build it 24" high.

Here's an interesting link that explains safety factors and other things to do with glass and aquarium building.

Even had some done it with 6mm, I'd be way to nervous to have it on one of my tanks. Just too thin.
