Can a Angel and severum cross breed?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Uaru, Discus, and Angelfish seem to be closely related to a degree. They also have similar breeding habits and care for fry.

Uaru and discus are very similar to each other in personality and parental care. Angels are laterally compressed like discus, but IMO the similarities don't extend to their behaviors or parenting. Having kept/bred discus and angels for a long time, I feel that angels are much more like Mesonauta. I started keeping angels when I was a kid and discus seemed like a natural progression at the time. Then I got my first discus and realized I was dealing with a whole new ball game.

I would love to read more about the evolution of South American cichlids but I don't have much to contribute. It is sad that we don't focus on those aspects of the hobby, but a thread about culling fish or who has the best festae ends up being 40 pages long. Maybe if we asked how many believed in evolution here we'd get a better response.

Seems to be a sea of Festae and Jack Demspey threads lately. Any good discussion thread usually turns into an argument and gets closed lol. Some of the more season vets aren't posting anymore but its good to see Tom back.

Lol well said ryan. I think after a while you get tired of the "stock my 100!" and " can I keep a midas in a 20 gallon?" types of threads. Would be nice to see discussions a little more mentally stimulating. Not that there ins't a place for those types of threads here but boy foes it get repetitive.

I too would love to see more threads on South American cichlids. If you go through the forums most are about the same fish not that there is anything wrong with that, just shows those fish are popular. I would however like to see more threads on the less aggressive types which is what I'm keeping these days.

Part of the issue is Angelfish and Discus have their own sub-forum. I know a bunch of us keep these but since that section gets about as much traffic as downtown Tombstone it's tuff to get a good conversation going about them. Maybe if they were folded back into the CA/SA section we would get more conversations started and increased interest in SA's as a whole. Just a thought.
