Can a common pleco survive in coldwater?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mine did ok in central FL year round but the temps did not get below the 50's air temp. Water stays about 10 degrees warmer. Will probably have to heat or take in where you are.

2 commons in my 4800g pond. they were in there last winter when it was a shallower 3300g pond and they did fine. az winters aren't that cold though but it should be similar to socal.

my larger one is now 20" in the pond and the smaller one is 15". the larger one was 12" last winter and the smaller was 9".

I HAD AN OUTDOOR POND APROX...2K GAL. KEPT COMMONS ONLY DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS, HAD TO CATCH AND BRING THEM IN DURING THE FALL AND WINTER MONTHS. THEY WILL NOT SURVIVE, TRUST ME.....:chillpill:

we kept our Pleco in our pond as we live in North Florida but once we knew the temperature would be in the upper 40's last winter, we took him out of the pond and put him indoors in the tank with intent of putting him back in pond in Spring. However, he is our most personable fish and he will be staying inside now. Pretty much if the temps are going to get down to upper 40's and you have a shallow pond, small pond you got to bring him in or heat the water.

How deep is your pond ?

A friend here has clown plecos in his pond.

Its a large pond but only 2- 3 feet deep and with a few night temps of 40 last winter but back to high 70s during day the pond still stayed in high 60s at night.

Granted you cant go wrong by not taking a risk.

as long as you have an aerator and slowly adjust them into the cold they will be fine. same as goldfish. u can also add a heater to the pond. or even put them in the garage
