So I am interested in possibly getting this 44 gallon pentagon shaped aquarium from a guy who lives about an hour away. He says the measurements are 22"x22"x24". I have 4 juvenile turquoise sevs I got from Jeff Rapps a few months ago. They were little 1" fish when I got them and now they are much more colorful 2.5-3" sevs. They have the orange on the fin on the bottom of their body, but otherwise look like baby green sevs. Anyways, the goal is for 2 of them to hopefully pair off and I will move them to their own tank for breeding. I initially thought a 55 gallon would work and I was quickly told they needed at least a 16-18" wide tank for space to turn around in and the smallest rectangular tank offering such a width is a 75 gallon. I know they need space to turn around in and this 44 gallon tank seems to offer that, but the smaller volume has me wondering if a breeding pair of severums can live comfortably at their max size in that tank? Any thoughts on if this would work or if I should hold out for a 75 gallon?

I think a 75 would still be too small for severums, they can reach length of 12". Rule of thumb, 50 gallons for each adult.

Well always going bigger is better, but those sevs probably could hold out for a year in that tank. Sev can hit 12" but I've never seen a full grown adult even push 10"

My adult male rotkeil is 7" and already makes my 55 gallon look small. I feel bad about the 12" dimension of the 55 and feel he might be cramped. Get the 75 before the severums, you're fish will thank you for it. Hope this helps! :)

Thanks for the info guys. I am going to hold out for the 75 gallon tank. I already have the sevs, so no getting a 75 before them. :) I have four 2.5-3" turquoise severums currently living in a 55 gallon with 5 small German blue rams and a bristlenose pleco. They all get along very well and there are tons of places to hide with 4 pieces of driftwood, 2 broken clay flower pots and a growing population of plants (java ferns, oriental swords and moneywort).

If they are already in a 55 I would hold out maybe get a bigger tank than a 75 gallon if the space is permitting. The 55 should hold them till you find the tank you want. Good luck
