I am thinking of setting up a 6-8 foot tank soon and I would like to know if the following setup would work. I currently have a FX5 and I am also thinking of also using a pond filter as well as the flow rate looks impressive.

Can a pond filter be used for an aquarium? Is there any reason why you wouldnt use a pond filter. Is there any real difference from a pond filter than a canister filter.

Thank you.

I have seen a lot of guys do it with big set ups.

Only thing that may be a problem, imo, is the strong output and water flow

Thanks Miguel. I was just wondering why people wouldnt use it if it provides better waterflow. I am big on over filtration. I am currently using my FX5 on my 3 foot and it does the job nicely. The guy at my LFS said the FX5 would kill all my fishes but IMO the flow is just right, and the fishes are not bothered.

Your new 6-8' tank has what dimensions? How many gallons?

I am using a pressurize pond filter. It's huge, and stuffed with scrubbies. The pump is the Quietone 300 which will provide enough flow rate for my tank. The outlet has a T which will split the water out into two. One will go to the spay bar. The other will go to a metal cannister with micron filter bag stuff with scrubbies. The output from the metal cannister (with valve to control the flow rate) feeds the 36W UV filter. The ouput from the UV filter goes through a sponge filter.

The input is covered with the 100 micron metal mess containner (similar to a sponge filter but easier to clean.) I don't have to open and clean my pond filter for months. I can just back plush whatever is in the bottom of the filter.

ive found that my pond filter (for a pond) tends to leak at the taps, and so ive had to sticky tape them up. pretty sure its the cheap pipes i used, but seeing as they are designed for outdoor use, resistance to leaking wouldn't be on manufacturers higher priorities (and buyers). and also, when it comes time to open it up and clean it, alot of the water spills out, even if your careful. i have a laguna pressure-flo 700 filter with an inbuilt uv sterilizer, and connected to a 3500lph (just under 1000gph) pump. once every 2 months i do a backwash, and then i only have to completely clean it once a year (and then its still reasonably clean). my pond is about 2000 litres (600 gallons).

ive also considered using a pond filter for an aquarium, and i thought it was a good alternative to a sump or aquarium canister filter, and they are suprisingly quiet, because the pump is located in the water.
