Can a pond filter be used for an aquarium?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
and seeing you are from oz, they have really cheap pond pressure filters at bunnings, like $100 cheap. wouldn't assume them to be of good quality, but you never know until you see it running. there is a more expensive one that has a u.v sterilizer built in, for around $250. but then my laguna filter cost $300, and thats a rolf. c. hagen brand, supposedly the best aquarium products manufacturer, according to this years practicalfishkeeping manufacturer awards.

edit: that was a quick reply

Impressive setup imisim.

Thank you. Go with a pond filter if you can. Most of the external pumps are energy efficient and provide you a lot of flow rate. It will be a lot cheaper than using a couple of aquarium cannisters or additional power head just to get the circulation you want. Also, the pond filter will allow you to stuff a lot of bio media.

those bunnings filters are stuffed with bio-balls and coarse sponge, i know because i went and opened the box, opened the filter an had a peek:naughty:

They are perfect for inside. I also have the Laguna. I paid $350 for the kit. And yes, wholesomer is my ebay name :grinno:

The Laguna doesn't have the tray option. You can only put the bio media in the bottom of filter.

Regarding the water-spill when servicing the filter. What I do is connect a hose to the back plush valve. unplug the pump, and close the input valve. Open the pressure release valve on top of the filter to release the pressure. The water will start to run out of the filter. Within a couple of minutes, the filter will be empty and I can safely remove the top cover. No leak, no spill :)

A large pond canister filter like the Oase Filtoclear with the back flush function. You can clean the filter out every time you do a water change.

I got the Oase Filtoclear 15000 for my new tank it's suitable for a stocked pond up to 7,000 litres. I just need to work out the pump I will be using with it. I have had a oase pump on one of my sumps for a long time they make good stuff but you pay for it.I will be using this pond filter as my mechanical filtration with a 12,000 LPH sump for the BIO filtration.
I know a person running the Filtoclear filter on his tank and he only cleans it out once every year. He said it could go a lot longer then that as the back flush funtion works so good.
