Can a Red Devil and Midas coexist in a 75gal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im going to go look at them again tomorrow morning. I almost like the look of the Midas better. Most of the time at fish stores the "midas" cichlids look exactally like a RD or vice versa. They look like mine with the bigger lips and longer pointier head. These guys are stockier and have a flatter face. What if I re arrange the tank and buy a Midas bigger than my Red Devil? I know its a pipe dream but it would be sweet if I could have both. I might get one and see what one I like better... Thanks guys..

Maybe if you had put them in at the same time and they grew up together.
But I believe your resident will see any new cichlid as a threat to it's dominence of the tank.
Some people have success totally rearranging a tank to add another cichlid.
But any new cichlid will be at a disadvantage, especially if you add just one.

Well that didnt go too well... I had the Midas in there for about an hour and the Red was cool and didnt do a thing then he just snapped and kept attacking the Midas to the point where he was jumping out of the water and banging the glass lid... Needless to say the Midas is now in my sons 30 gallon with like 9 tiger barbs... You should see those little barbs try to nip his back fin, they all gang up on my poor midas :( untill he turns around and flares his gills then they scatter.. Not sure what to do with him yet I might keep him and look for another 75 for just him..

If both are males they will eventually start fighting maybe not now but will down the road. If you keep both and they turn out to be male and female they'll start breeding which you wouldn't want to happen because they'll just create more Midas/RD mix.

Just pick one or the other and fill the tank with dithers such as Silver Dollars, clown loaches, catfishes/plecos, etc.

You will eventually need to get a bigger tank. A 75 is too small even for one full grown fish of either type.
Actually, a 75g is the bare minimum for either of these fish. Would be just fine for one or the other. Just grab another 75g and you'll be fine.;)

So even though we advised you against it you still tired. Not to be a jerk or anything but if people are going to do something anyway then why ask????????
