Mbunas shouldn't be mixed with oscars, there are too many differences, especially in diet. Also, if the oscar can't eat them, the mbunas otherwise will have their way with the peaceful oscar.

It would work in a bigger tank. I have done it, am currently doing it, and will do it again.
If you have enough rocks and hiding places, the O will never catch one. I had a PITA Demasoni that was destroying all of my other ones. I tossed it in my pred tank and it lived in there for 4 months. I eventually got some bigger dems and was able to put the PITA dem back in the mbuna tank.

I wasn't saying it wouldn't work, I'm just saying that the diet of mbunas and preferred water conditions are pretty different, and it is not the best situation.
It depends on the africans. If you make an average between the fishes normal water parameters then they can all thrive. The key is stable water parameters.
That sounds fine if you are mixing oscars with something like Aulonocara or predatory haps like eye-biters, I just don't think mbuna are a good idea for the proposed setup, specifically on the diet issue.
IMO an oscar would probably do okay w/ those fish dep on the africans but not in a 55g.
i had an oscar and a dempsey in w/ 2 psuedos and it was fine. the pseudos were acclimated into softer water over a few years, though.

and I did it in a forty.. That is all I had for a long time... And I kept africans and my O together.. After all there diet isn't all that different.
Still after a while you will likely decide it is not your style.. Then you will make a decision what you like.. And you will likely keep a continent
When beginning we always have tanks that are too small and variety of supposed non compatible fish... Though it works.. I still found that I was missing something.. Then I started keeping African only and American only... Still I am not perfect.
And as most have said.. It would likely work it just is not suggested
