Can anyone compare the FX5 to the eheim 2262?

1099 is pure epic fail. You should go up to the shop keeper and tell him the truth.

They don't care about enthusiasts, only care about making sales of overpriced items to people who have no idea what they are purchasing.

The whole retail aquarium accessories industry in Australia is a complete ripoff. Online sales is the only way to get a fair deal these days.

The 2262 has never been sold in Australia or in any other country apart the the USA and Canada.
So you didn't see a 2262 for $1099 but rather a 2260 and if that included double taps and the full media kit its still about $300 overpriced.

Hi guys,
I have 2 x 2260's on my 8x2x2. One was new in March 2009 and the other was new in September 2010. The newest of the two cost me AUD$655.00 from a shop in Brisbane. Note that this price did not include the double taps (they cost me about AUD$130 as a separate item), nor did it include media.

This same shop, however, sells extremely cheap media in larger quantities so I ended up OK. It pays to shop around, as one place in Victoria quoted me just over AUD$1300 for the filter alone!

I contacted the Eheim wholesale distributor for Australia and they told me they only import about 50 or so of these filters at a time. This could be why they retail for such an unrealistically high price... anyway, I have two of them and I love them to bits!

Sorry taksan I am afraid your information is incorrect, they sell the 2262 here, and have been doing so for a long time. Whether they purchase from the official eheim distributor or not that much I don't know The 2260 is also sold here. ($899)Whether or not the current eheim distributor is bringing them as new stock something I don't know. I can confirm 2 lfs in my area that are currently selling the 2262.
I also know that a lot the lfs are sourcing their accessories directly from overseas bypassing the local distributors to save on costs.

Examples Fx5 in lfs as of yesterday $605.
Fx5 online from an Au online shop so includes GST and a 10% discount for price beat guarantee $400.

Fx5 does not spit micro bubbles for no reason. The only reason it would do this is if the media clogs... not talking only the sponges. the bio media as well.

Ehiem has one major flaw in every single design......... NO FLOW! They are horrible at producing a good flow. If you want current created in your tank and don't want to eat up electricity.....Fx5 all the way.

wrong, tried with every combination of media including none, still spit micro bubbles, like I said, junk

I bet if everyone with a fx5 that had a micro bubble problem that they said they couldn't get rid of, sent their filters to me.... Take my 2 seconds to get it working right.

Like I said, it won't do it for no reason. Could be the seal at the pump too.

Fx5 is an awesome filter, not saying its the best. I have had two and both worked great. One went with my 180 gal I sold.

Good points. It does seem the 2262 is far more inefficient when it comes to flow and power usage. Could this be because it's moving water through a much larger bio stage? The fx5 's bio capacity is much smaller so I wonder if that has an effect. Might have to buy one of each and let em duke it out!!

Very good thread and discussion btw. Every time I think I've made my decision I go the other way. Any fx5 users have any build quality issues? Seems the 2262 is pretty bulletproof and for the money it should be.

For me it will be wrong to buy a filter just because of the flow, and if its flow what i want i can change pumps on any of my big eheims 2250 2260 2262. Flow, how much? 1200,1600 for sure i cut get that with just simply changing the pumps, which you can not do on your fx5, besides fx5 its the only hight fow canister fluval has, and its so bad that needs periodically cleaning otherwise no flow comes out. I like a filter that its good, reliable and low maintenance, Eheim have all that.

When it comes to large capacities, usually that includes lower restriction. The 2262 cross section surface area is larger which could reduce restriction. So this would not be a reason why the 2262 has a lower flow rate. I could be that the filter is designed for the lower flow pumps and putting the 2262 pump on might just be more about marketing instead of function.

Go ahead and buy a 1200 gph pump and put it on the 2250 or 2260. I bet you won't get more than 500 gph. The filter canister will be the restriction at that point.

I don't need to do this on the Fx5. The more flow you add to a canister filter, the faster it will clog up. If you were ACTUALLY able to double the flow of the 2250/2260 you would clog up twice as fast.

Ehiems do have all that. BTW, my Fx5 has been running for years. Usually goes about 6 months before cleaning. Reliable, low maintenance and good.
