Can anyone compare the FX5 to the eheim 2262?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Actually the FX5 Flow rate is 924 GPH not 600. The 600 is with media. !

900 GPH is the PUMP output. A different test method. 600 GPH is the FILTER output with or without media. When the canister is clean and not jammed pack with media, there is not enough of a restriction to lower the flow rate a -300GPH. The Pump output is probably off the canister with very little restriction on the suction side and very little on the discharge side. This all changes when putting it on the canister with an intake to the impeller that is nearly 2/3 the diameter of the intake of the enclosed impeller, among other restriction.

Picture it this way, my modded fx5 filter, which could have a lot less restriction, if there was any to measure in the original design, still only flows 600 GPH.

But remember that the 900 gph for the 2262 is also without media
Correct. Probably a bit lower with media, in the 750-800 GPH range since Eheim media really jam packs their canisters. You still have roughly a 12.5" - 13" diameter cylinder for water to pass through. Thats makes the area fairly large. Over 122 sq/in

I've started to see more retailers advertise this for some reason that the FX5 flow rate is 600 with media but no mention of the 2262 flow rate with media.
Thats because 600 GPH is the filter flow output and not the pump output. Retailers are probubly noticing that the 900 GPH is for marketing only and should not have ever reached the text book manual for the Fx5.

The pump output is around 900 GPH for the Eheim 2262 pump. They just use that figure for marketing purposes. Stick this pump on a canister and with restriction on the suction side as well as the output side and you get a reduction in flow.

The main component that makes eheims great are their pumps. I"ve heard numerous stories about the eheim 1262 lasting 10+ years and still going strong.
I have a 2026 which has been running for more that 10 years.

Tcarswell: I meant to say this was the "pump output" and not the "filter flow output".
Sorry for the misinformation.

Eheim 2262
Filter Flow Rate: 900 GPH

Eheim 2262
Pump Output: 900 GPH

Could a MOD change my first post in this thread to reflect these important changes??

If it was me...

I would buy the 2260 from forsterNsmith for $250...

13 liters of substratpro for around $140 + tax delivered from wildlife supply.
5 liters of ehfimech noodles for around $29 + tax from petsmart.

now to add it up...
$250 @ 2260
$175 @ Media 18liters total 13 substratpro/5 ehfimech
------
$425 +- and your up and running

You can find a 2162 pump around $155 - $165 delivered.
I heard it was a direct fit between these 2 pumps so ....
worse thing to happen....
you will have a spare pump for your sump and canister... :)

It's cheaper to buy a 2260 at Foster smith, and then buy the 1262 pump and put it on.. then making it a 2262. and you have an extra pump for back up..
Im gonna price check if your right thank you very much for the tip. You never know when you might need an extra 10+year pump :headbang2 Thanks all doing my price searching and research today I got the day off woot. Either way I am gonna have both because as of this morning I got 2 FX5's lol and I am dead set on owning a 2262:D

Big thanks to everyone!

Wanted to add some.

900 GPH is without media but is also OFF the canister. Like I said before, total flow changes when you install it on to a canister.

Ok you had me all confused now I gotcha thanks man,
Ya I had my self confused after reading it over again. Sorry Bud.
