can anyone I.d my new young ray? sold as a tea cup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just bought it on friday. Havent attempted feeding it yet. its in a 40 breeder at the moment with that poly.

I never owned a ray before because every kind ive came across is much to large for me to house in any of my tanks. My largest being a 125 but it has some red bellies piranhas in it. Like I said im kind of a piranha keeper more then anything. I havent messed much with other fresh water predatory fish besides polys. So I was going to see how I fair with keeping one.

But u said black worms are probibly something I may have to feed? Ive had to do that with discus before and I could get some.

You still dont have enough space........rule of thumb is rays need 2x their disc width to properly turn around front to back.... which will put you in about the 300+ gal range and thats at a minimum even more so than the floor space is the water quality.........they secrete urine that is straight ammonia.......and they should never go a day without eating.......

Alright thanks. So basicly most of what im told was fine wasnt actaully correct by the lfs as well as other places. Which really isnt something I should have expected at all. It was defintly an impulse to purchase it. Really was iffy on it.
But now anyways whats done with that is done.

So if I were to really have done things correctly u even need pretty much a custom built tank due to the weird footprint and amount of volume needed. Then for filtration most like a massive amount of biomedia probibly from multiple large canisters or sump? I guess I was stupid and excited when in the lfs and let the employee talk me into it.

But seeing I have it what would the best action to take for it to be just for this single ray? Really feel kinda bad for making the mistake of buying a fish before researching it better then I did. Rays really are a whole different ball game from every other fish it sounds like.

Should I add a eheim 2217 then safely to the ac100 already on it. And for feedings I was told bloodworms. Which I was going to do pretty soon tonight. I have crawlers. Should I try those instead? Seeing its a rectic dont even attempt tilipia u think?

You can offer it a variety of food see what it takes to then stick with that just clean out what goes uneaten.........I shoot for cycling about 10 times the tank capacity per hour a 0ppm ammonia is a must or it will burn their underside also the heater needs to be covered ........and really with enough filtration and 30-40% water changes weekly if not more you could probably get away with a standard 220 gal or so......

Alright one more question. Now after someone mentioning it I also see now how very thin mine is. Now how long does it rake a ray to get that thin. Is that more prolly from it being picky or may it have some parasites. Does soaking the food in like vitachem or garlic help them usaully take food? Are they a fish that has a hard time settling in?
Sorry for the 20 questions. Learning much more from this thread then I did digg8in through google n stuff.

Ive imported retics direct. They land and don't eat for weeks sometimes. I know some stores also import direct and sell them before they are eating which is just wrong! If you bought your retic and they didn't show you that it eats then it probably hasn't eaten in a very long time. Id suggest feeding live ghost shrimp or live black worms asap before it starves to death. I wouldn't use vitachem just yet as in my experience they don't like the taste of it and will only eat food dipped in vitachem after they are already used to that particular food. Your big dilemma is to ensure good water perams and getting it to eat.

If it was eating regularly I say yea prob a parasite but i think yours is just plain starving. Ghost shrimp are an option for food and fun to watch them eat dont hold alot of nutritional value tho but at this point anything u can get it to accept is great for now

Alright thanks guys. I threw some ghost shrimp in the tank. Unforntantly my lfs is out of blackworms till weds. Its a different one from the one I got it at. But weds ill get them. Also am going to throw that poly in another tank. Ill have to set it up tonight. Ill just steal a established hob filter from one of my small serras tanks. They plenty good on filtration anyways. Im going to add a large canister I have with just straight up biomedia and use the aquaclear for the mechical I think.
How much water should I change daily intill u can get a larger tank for it. If my filters can tackle the amonia and convert it all to nitrates how much wc should I prolly be looking at to keep it below a safe level for it. Assuming the 20 ppm range is where u should hope to be atleast?
