Not to derail but I did before on similar texas thread, texas be it Cyanoguttatus or carpintus from a lfs are normally a mess, I went to catch some real texas a few months back I will post some pics soon...

It is the South American exCichlasoma ornatum/gephyrum. Here's one of mine.

i dont believe it is a ornatum, the mouth and forehead structure dont match up...with the long sloped forehead i would say its definitely a Herichtys Sp but probably has more to it, does he always show the stress bars like that???

It's a texas hybrid. No way is that ornatum/gephyrum.

Well, I still think it's an 'ornatum' ... however, I have to admit that nowadays hybridization is so rampant that I'm sure it could be any mish-mash.

it is Carpinti or Texas for sure
and Hybrid of them for sure.
It is Not Ornatum for sure.
trust

I'm still with Texas. I put them side by side and you can clearly see the difference, that they aren't the same fish, mouth, eyes, distance from eye to mouth, etc.

that is a smart comparison, i like....there are so many herichtys sp these days it might as well be a bona-fide sp and not a mix at all....who knows...good fish though..

No actually the bars go away sometimes, usually during the day. In fact, he gets really light gray sometimes with no bars at all, which made me think he was perhaps a Texas. But then at night the bars are really evident and he gets really dark. Both colors are very different which threw me off on what he was.

If this fish is always this color I don't think it is this because mine gets much lighter sometimes. The picture I took was later in the day.
I'd say texas x mayan

That's what I thought at first but sometimes the bars are completely gone, which made me think otherwise.

I guess I should post a picture on what he looks like without the bars.
