Can anyone ID this guy for me??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The Punctatus has spots on the sides, which mine does not have, so I did not add a pic of it... The Lupus is the one that does not have much of a forked tail as described in Planet Catfish. The "blue channel cat" or Furcatus (in Latin means forked) is close in coloring, but the tail is off to me... I'm just trying to find out what type of channel cat this may be, thanks again!!

Lupus and furcatus are rare-to-non-existent in the trade. Punctatus is overwhelmingly everywhere, being #1 farmed fish in the US. It looks like a channel to me too but channels have a deep fork in their tails at all ages - http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=6

The tail could have been "trimmed" by tank mates, etc. I struggle to imagine it is one of the bullheads. The only one with a somewhat forked tail is http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=263 Ameiurus catus, North American White Catfish.

ID section: "Sometimes confused with the Channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus. The white catfish has 22-24 anal rays while the channel cat has 25-28. The white catfish is sort of on the cusp, showing characteristics of both Ictalurus and Ameiurus."

As for the spots on the punctatus, I'm not sure they all have them at the baby-juvi ages. I tend to think they usually do, perhaps not necessarily always.

Thank you... I have not counted the rays yet as he is hiding under a log. I will. He def does not have any spots and his tail is not that forked. It has the "c" shape anal fin tho for sure. Also, the tail was 100% not "trimmed" at all.

It does not look much like the small channel cats in your planet catfish attachments imo and more like that white catfish in your attachment.... I'm going to try and count the rays now.

Good idea. Also, keep in mind deformities and oddities in channels do occur, not often but they do.

When counting the rays, be careful to count the main ones, not the branches of the branched rays. Very hard on a small fish. Need superb photos.

To get even more sure, I'd suggest to post the ID question on PCF with good photos. These are ok but not good enough/not enough of them/angles IMHO.

Where are you located? Id really bet against it being a white catfish. Blue and channels are more likely. The one pic that shows the anal fin a bit leads me to think channel. Channel have a rounded anal fin and blues have a flat. As they grow the morphology of the head becomes very different.

Still very difficult to tell. Im going back to review your pics again lol
