Can Anyone ID This TREE? Fish Safe Wood?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I haven't lived here very long so I can't answer any questions on flowers or leaf color or anything. It just started putting out leaves this week.

It looks like Corkscrew Willow, but I would need to see a close-up of the leaves to know for sure.

Willows contain salicylic acid (aspirin), so maybe it will cure your fish's headaches. It may be hard to get to sink, as it is a fairly light and soft wood.

I agree. This is the stuff that flourist shops/craft stores use for making floral arrangements. If you want to see how it looks feels, try heading over to a flower shop local to you. They will have plenty on hand.

ya it will be fine. The rule of thumb is to NOT use conifers(softwood/excurrent). These are trees like "pine trees". Use broadleaved trees (decurrent/hardwood) like maple, chestnut, etc. Some shrub species work also. Manzanita is extremely popular because of its easy workability and beautiful designs. So to answer your question, you have a safe species. It is considered an aquarium safe hardwood species.

It failed in one of my tanks years ago it didn't kill the fish but after soaking for a couple weeks it basically started to dissolve in water i wasn't impressed with it and it never sank unless it was weighted down

Sweet. I cut a big branch about a month ago, cut it into smaller pieces today for my 125. I'm gonna fill the tank and soak the wood (no fish), I'll post pictures tonight. It already looks really cool.

I'll see what happens. If it doesn't work out I can always go up to the mountains and find some manzanita. Thanks guys.
