Now that's interesting...could it be that xingu are particularly susceptible to whatever it is?

i’m thinking

/ my intermedia (different tank) has / had it as well - no other fish in same water showing signs - other xingu i have is clean - go figure - some weak dna ? my xingu came from asia fish farm / intermedia are wild?

i dunno ?‍♂️

Stress can come from umpteen hundred sources.
This Cichla may be the type from very low mineral content, soft water rivers, and if housed in tap water that is hard with high pH and even in a slightly elevated nitrate situation where level rise to only 10ppm , could be susceptible to chronic HLLE, in the same way old oscars kept in hard water often present with that disease.
And if the anti-bacterial conditions of tannins they are evolved to live in, are not provided this may add to the stress, and susceptibility.
HTH is an opportunistic infection that can take advantage of a minor injury, and thrives at a pH of 7.5 to 8.5,, higher conductivity water..
