Agreed, I have never seen the wild color variety. I actually thought that the red color was the normal color. I think I might have to invest in one of these once I get a bigger tank.
I found the pair that I kept were very peaceful and hardy, even when breeding they were not very aggressive. They chased other fish away, but not very vigourosly like other cichlids. Their mouths are very protusive when feeding.
When mine were small-got them at two inches- their colours were pale and washed out. They become quite spectaculer at about 5 inches. Mine grew out to about 12 inches before they were killed by a mean Butti.
Odd, i've only seen the camo variant, never the red (except when petsmart started carrying them, now I own one). My dad had a 15" male when I was a kid. They do get aggressive when they get big. Dad used to feed him perch. Great fish.
