I kept my cats in a pond all year round, but it doesn't freeze here.

Thats all you need ;) I kept them in my outdoor pond for 10+ years with never a winter issue.

I never had any frogs for 10 years also.........

would i love if you talked Celsius instead of Fahrenheits.....

well i live in southern nj, where the weather is influenced by the ocean so the winters are ussually mild with maybe 3 weeks of freezing temperature during the whole winter. How much does the heater cost and i was thinking some type of flotation device or styrofoam the bobs at surface breaking the ice around it.

Those heaters are about $20

Those stock tank heaters work well, but make sure it is plugged into A GFCI. They are notorious for shorting out, and leaking voltage into the water. We use them for our cattle, and have on three occasions watched a mob of cows, thirsty as hell standing around a trough bawling. The first time, I stuck my hand in the water, and got zapped. Since then I have switched the outlet to A GFCI.

In the winter I usually forget and wait until the pond is about a foot thick with ice, then throw the defroster in, or I should say "on" . It will lay on the ice and start to melt its way down. In a day or two I have NO ice at all :D

I'm on my third one in about 14 years.
