I had a similar fish who would do the same stuff, though i feared it was boredom.

Of course! My shrimp love to climb up the tank walls and my fish like playing the the filter current! When the heater is on they play around it to get extra warm sometimes!

And I thought the 12 year old burning houses and cars in my neighborhood had issues.

Anyways my clown loaches play just about all day long and seem to enjoy themselves. Plus one of my rays will wait for the other one to hide in the sand and then will come swimming along and pounce on him. So yes I feel they do.
