Definitely a convict and something is nipping it's tail fin.
Yes its tail was like that when I got him. I was hoping it would heal up with clean water over time.
Looks like a male con to me. I imagine once he settles and grows, he’ll probably be the tank boss. He’s nowhere near full size
If it’s a male, it should be 6”+ within two years maybe sooner
Definitely a male. Females typically won’t have trailers like that and have extra orange on the bellies + some blue on the fins.
My female to compare:
Based on the nips, it’s definitely been through the wringer.
Clean water is the best contributor to growth - a good water change schedule will yield faster growth.
I don’t recall mine growing noticeably fast - just a slow growth till the 3.5-4 inches it is now.
