If he using it for a rain barrel he would be constantly refilling and draining it to use the rain water and it overflows. Free water changes.

Won't the water be full of ammonia without filtration and stocked with goldfish?

I figure not. I only planned on having 2 or 3 in there. It usually rains at least once every 1 or 2 weeks during the summer where I live. Even with moderate amounts of rain the water barrel fills up fast. Sometimes in less then an hour. I guess I could do water changes myself if it doesn't end up raining.

Kind of defeats the purpose of a water barrel, no?

Also, I'd use some Gambusia over goldfish.

Just my 2 cents. :)

Put a betta in there. mosquito larva is thier food in nature and it will do fine in an unaerated 55g barrel. wont outgrow it like a goldfish will either.or breed like crazy like guppies or mosquitofish. Plus you can feel like you are doing a good deed saving it from life in a 1g betta bowl.
