I noticed some peculiar behavior in my community tank this weekend. I did some cleaning of the rocks (leveling out the whole tank) and water changes. I noticed last night that the Oscar & Frontosa are clearing rocks from the same area, just under neath a piece of slate. Before I did the cleaning this area was for the Front, he/she stayed there. Now the Oscar & Front are cleaning the same area out and I was wondering if it was possible for them to breed???

If so, what other type of behavior can I look for?

If not, can you tell me why??

Thanks,

Dan

Fronts are from Africa and O's from SA, correct? So probably not

frontosas are very passive and would likely get beat on by the oscar. i really dont think it would be a good idea.
and they are not related in any way so breeding would be out of the question.

I would say no...

Fish that would not accept one another as "partners" in the wild may do so in captivity. I would compare this to being "prison ***". When no other options is available... some things decide to compromise and settle for what’s available...

This explains the action but doesn't answer the question...

I've always heard that fish from different continents cannot breed together, but it seems SalmonAfrica may know something I don't. So to state this more accurately, species of Cichlids that are far removed from one another in the cichlidae family will not produce fry together, and I'm quite confident that Fronts and Oscars are far enough removed that there is no chance of a successful spawn...

Yet this doesn't mean they won't try... I've had females of different species try to breed together... it didn't work for them either ;)

WOW, frontosa's are mouthbroaders and oscars are eggs layers?????.....so NO.
Also oscar cant breed with any other species, bar other Astronotus.

Thanks for the responses. I thought their behavior was very interesting. I know I have had Oscars in the past lay eggs, when there were not other fish in the tank, I wonder what would happen if the Front laid eggs, would the O fertilize them? I do doubt it, but still stranger things have happened.

I will update if anything else happens.

thanks again for the responses.
