Can guppies change sex?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my uncle had a load of guppy fry that he placed in the balcony(meaning loads of sun etc), and they all turned out male. why is this so??

I know livebearers can store sprerm for several months. I will go by my morals that a female can not turn 100% male and vice versa.

XX= Male
XY= Female

did they actually turn into males, or just look that way? guppies kept in strong sunlight will change color, often getting very dark. he may have thought that since they were not the normal silver/gold female color, that they had all turned into males. additionally, temperature during early development can affect the sex of the fry, though i am not sure if it is only in-utero or extends into the first few days after birth.

I think you have that backwards...it should be:

Male = XY
Female = XX

If a male carries XX chromasonal arrangement that would be an "XX male syndrome"...they would probably be sterile.

I know that I learned in my college zoology classes that sex change is real among livebarers, especially swordtails. I've even seen talk about it on some of the animal planet and the discovery channel shows

To the cynics on this forum....

I have just one female albino guppy who gave birth while isolated in a breeding tank. Sadly the fry managed to swim straight past the bars and got eaten. I did however manage to rescue one survivor and it is now two weeks old. This fry is also an albino.

Some two weeks later I see that there is no sign of any impending pregnancy in the adult female albino. Importantly she has developed a gonopodium since giving birth. I look forward with interest to see if she will impregnate any of my females since I have not bought any males let alone any other albino guppies. So far she/he has shown no obvious interest in the females but her/his gonopodium is unmistakable.

guppies can change sex from female to male. I have though never seen it the other way around it seems like they are not fertile after the change, but one could then ask one self why would they change if they wouldn't become fertile??

Guppy sex change has never happened in any of my tanks in over 30 years of keeping them. I know lots of guppy breeders and have never heard of guppies changing sex in their aquariums. Serious guppy breeders separate their fish by sex early on in order to line breed for specific traits. Virgin females are placed together in tanks and never produce fry until they are fertilized by a male.

HEHE i am the lucky owner of one so it can happen!!! the he/she is about 5cm (its a wild caught and the males are only 2-3cm) if it will be fertile later on i could make some test on. I will upload photo on the phenomenon as soon as i can get my camera working, there is no doubt that its a female that has changed the fish is 5 cm with almost no collar, but she has gotten a few collar spots now after the change, why it have happent I don't know, i suspect temperature has an impact and maybe ph of water, it will though take me some time to prove if it gets fertile as i dont have any virgin females atm. but i will post results when i am surden (3 month)

I am not exactly sure if we can term it as "Change Sex"

But i have encountered on several occasions where a female guppy morph into a male guppy. This occur even in endler guppies
So you are not the only one.

However, i am not exactly if it will be a functional male as i keep them as a group.

Hope that helps
