Hey everybody,

I had been planning on ordering some of the more rare cichlids online for my new 125 gallon but could never make up my mind (I mostly blame everybody else on forums like this for having such cool cichlids). So finally this weekend I just broke down and drove to a LFS about an hour and a half away from where I live (I have to go this far to get anything other than really small fish stores/PETCOs).

I ended up getting a Texas cichlid, JD, and a Firemouth all at a little over an inch in size. I also picked up 15 giant danios (around 1-1.5 inches) mostly because they were on sale for $1 each. I know the danios will not make it long term but they were really cheap and should last a while before any body in the tanks sees them as snacks.

In a 125 gallon tank these little guys look very sparse and I would like to add one-two more cichlids.

I am thinking on keeping this as a community tank but wouldn't totally be against having a pair of something. I thought of getting a few more firemouths and doing a pair of those or something a little smaller like rainbows if I couldn't think of anything else to add to this group. I would worry about doing rainbows though as I didn't know how they would do with the texas or JD.

So any suggestions would help a ton. Thanks!

You can 100% add more fish... right now you have three 1" fish in a 125g tank, lol. I would watch that Firemouth with the Texas and JD since they are not (for the most part) truely aggressive cichlids. IME, Texas cichlids can be pretty mean. Is it a "true" Texas? Cyano or Carpintis? Good luck.

At such a small size I couldn't actually tell if it was a carpintis or a cyano. It was only labeled as a Texas Cichlid at the LFS. I didn't even know if at such a small size one could tell the difference. If you guys thing you can tell at such a small size I'll try and get some pics up.

Any Ideas for tankmates though?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think you can tell at 1". As for tankmates... maybe a GT?? You could add a Vieja of some sort maybe Regani or Bifa?? Pearsei?? Just watch your Firemouth with these types of fish.

I might try to get some pics tonight. I have never been really that good at getting good pictures of fish with the camera that I have so we'll see. I guess if I for sure knew what I had it would make deciding what to get a little easier.

he gets on fine with all my fish and to be completely honesy with you cage, In a tank that big you dont really have to worry about the firemouth not being aggressive enough, if it needs to hide it will find plenty of spaces, for the most part the aggressive fish will probably just squabble amongst themselves and ignore the firemouth, I´ve found that was the case with my old firemouths.

can I add, there is nothing bad about having common species of fish. the reason why they are common is cause they are so rewarding and loved by hobbyists. cichlids are great fish to keep regardless of rarity or species, so you will definately enjoy your new fish :D pics?

maybe if you tell us what else is available at the store,we can suggest what might work.does the store have many choices? i agree with some vieja type fish to add.convict,HRP,other cryptos, nics.all depends on the availability.if ordering online is an option for you, then you have bigger selection.small fish ship well.at small size we can probably ID your texas.

About ordering online are there any breeders that are in the Midwest? Seems like the most popular ones are all from the East Coast. Just asking because I know that the farther away they are the more you pay on shipping.

Also I am working on uploading photos and will have some up in a little bit.

I didn't get very good pics of the little guy but here are two shots of my Texas. Can you guys tell me for sure what species it is?
