Okay, the tiger Oscar is gone and I've added 5 new loaches

Here is a shot of a few of them together.

They all look good except one is unusually skinny. The previous owner says he's had them for a year and a half, and its always been real skinny. In the group shot you can see my small fire mouth. He keeps going after the big loach, if he is still doing that tomorrow, He might get sold too.

The Clowns will give you all kinds of entertainment!! Try soaking some food in Garlic Guard to help with the Skinny loach. As for adding Tetras, ..........don't know how well that will work. The tetras generally like less waterflow, and the Cl's love fast moving water, you may want to look into different tank mates. Barbs work rather well and are fun to watch just because of their ADHD!! Yo-yos should be fine with the Cl's. The Rainbow Shark will actually "hang out" with the CL's if you put him in the main tank. Be very carefull with getting addicted to the Cl's though. I started with a 75 planted and am now finishing a 220 planted just for my CL's!!! And my shoal has grown to 23!

And of course pictures are always good!

Instead of using play sand, you might want to check out your local pool store. They sell pool filter sand that works great in tanks, we use an area of sand for the loaches to play in and gravel for the rest of the tank. Loaches have quickly become my favorite fish, and work well in larger groups they are much more active.

Awesome thanks for the information. I am definitely getting hooked on clown loaches, and so is the gf .:nilly:So far everything seems good, except my firemouth loves to chase the largest of the clown loaches, he'll chase the others too, but nothing like he does the big guy. Thanks for the tip on the garlic guard, is that a medicine or just something to get them to eat?

No problem, that's part of the reason why we are here.....heh heh.

Once you have a few more CL's, they will begin to show the firemouth who the Bosses really are. Garlic Guard is an additive that helps treat fish and (I think this is true, someone may be able to confirm or deny this for me) also helps to boost natural immunities. (looks really cheesey once its typed). Some people use Garlic cloves to do the same thing. I am sure that somewhere there is a thread about Garlic here on MFK. Just don't know where........

Once you get some good Antics be sure to post them in the "Share your Loach Antics" thread.

I am using black gravel, creek pebbles and pool filter sand in the 220. My Loaches love to dig around in the sand, and my "Big Girl" (only about 5 in) has been picking up the creek pebbles and moving them to forage for food. Kept wondering where the heck this pile was coming from until I finally saw her in the process of rearranging.

Love the Loaches!

I just found out my lfs has one for sale thats 4-5 inches or so. They want $55 I feel so bad for him, he's sitting in a small tank all by himself, but unfortunatly i dont have 55 dollars :(

Welcome to the club!!!! I started with 6 and now have 23!! Once they are all moved into the 220 it will be off on the search for a couple more "oddballs". I have a couple of saddlebacks and a couple of my small ones with a odd spot or two on them. Have fun and remember to start thinking now about building the next bigger tank. heh heh.

definitely go with sand & get some garlic extract. The Yoyos may not shoal with the CL's because their coloration is not similar. Tiger barbs make great tankmates because their colors match & the CL's think they are part of the shoal. Other than that, keep an eye out for good oddballs to add to the shoal, use proper quarantine measures & enjoy your new addiction!

Just wanted to update everyone. The skinny loach I had is still skinnier than the others, but is steadily putting on weight. I decided to go with serpae tetras as my dither fish since they won't nip the fins of my angels. The clown loaches were hidden alot. I added 8 of the serpae tetras, 4 angel fish, 4 plastic plants, some floating plant(need alot more I want a water lily, and maybe some water lettuce) and a live plant. now all the smaller clown loaches are pretty active. I see one of the larger loaches a good amount but he still hides alot, and my biggest usually only comes out at night.
