Can I feed my fish this dog food?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I totally understand the $$$$ dilemma, no discounts for me either. I’ve been out of the fish food game for many years. I just wanted to add, that while most folks would like to save their hard earned cash, for things like human food, etc, one can only go so cheap before the end result is fish that are being fed a poor diet, which is usually accompanied with excessive waste from the indigestible portion of the food. Lower cost raw ingredients typically equate to lower bioavailability, which equates to a LOT more coming out the other end. In a closed system such as an aquarium, that equates to more maintenance, something I do my best to avoid. For myself, time is also $$$$, so less time cleaning filters, media, performing water changes, also facors in regarding food quality and overall cost and value. Also, many novices also tend to over feed, and no matter how high quality or digestible a food may be, over feeding simply results in more waste, and lower water quality. A hungry fish is a healthy fish, keep ‘‘em hungry!

Here's almost a 5lb bucket on amazon in usd. For reference..

The current exchange rate means that your $79.56 purchase equates to about £67.00 UK sterling. I'd consider that expensive, but I'm about to pull the trigger on more or less the same bucket for £90.00!!!! I consider that.......criminal!

Agree, probably import costs fees etc. I still consider the usd cost high. I only have 1 tank and my fish are only 2 inches long so far so i can afford the good stuff lol. A 300g canister lasts forever at this size

What’s truly criminal is the current cost of fuel, which in your case factors in at a MUCH higher rate than a vendor getting their supplies from a local distributor in the USA. We see the same thing here in Canada, and we are right across the border. Many items, if you can even get them, are twice the cost as in the US.

At least today, there are options available for those that can afford them. I remember when the only options available were ALL low cost, and nutritionally speaking very low overall quality. The pet food industry on a whole is light years ahead of where it was at 50 yrs ago when I was just a kid.

I'd like to see Canucks in kilts year round. That would rid the country of children and Canuckstan will become pretty much an adult-only community and rely only on the yearly immigration influx.

Thanks to RD's edifying postings on fish nutrition, we ditched 2-3 years ago the <$1/lb (delivered) Zeigler Bros silver finfish aquaculture pellets and switched 100% (when it comes to pellets) to the NLS, which we are fortunate to buy at wholesale price of ~$7/lb before shipping, with shipping, comes to ~$8/lb (and the pellets are made 2 hours away from our town in Homestead, FL.

We buy 16x 5lb packages every 2-3 months, paying ~$650 each time.

I can totally support RD's statement about the incomparable assimilation rates vs Zeigler. Hard to gauge but an order of magnitude less fertilizer comes out the other end.

According to my reckoning, factoring in conversion rates etc, your $8/lb price equates to me paying the equivalent of just shy of £15/kilo, which would be about £30 for my 2kg bucket. Now that, I could live with.

But my 2kg bucket, instead, is going to cost me just shy of £90!!

Honestly, if it wasn't for the fact that you're more than likely using the largest pellets, which are no good to me, I'd be better off buying my NLS from you Victor, lol.

When I first found MFK and read about you using that Zeigler stuff, Viktor, I was on the verge of ordering some myself...as silly as that now sounds, considering that I have a grand total of one fish big enough to eat it. I'm glad I followed along your threads and those general nutrition threads by RD. RD. to nip that idea in the bud. Cheapness is an incurable condition, and I must be vigilant at all times when the symptoms appear. :)

And, for the record...I received a kilt as a gift, or more precisely a gag gift, several years ago and wear it regularly around the house and yard. Super comfortable, the ideal garment for warm weather, especially if I am working in or around the pond. Not something I would choose for some activities like hunting or quadding, but for casual relaxed wear it's tough to beat.

As a bonus...wearing a kilt seems to sharpen your senses to an almost supernatural degree. I mean, after your dog has snuck up on you a few times while you are kilted...you either learn to pay better attention...or you wear something else! :WHOA:

If anyone here should be complaining about feed costs, it should be Victor.

But in the end it is what it is, for those that can’t afford a more premium diet for their fish, feed the best food that you can source locally, that suits your wallet. Most commercial foods designed for the pet food industry are pretty good quality wise, and there are several brands that are plenty good enough at maintaining good health in freshwater species. Feed the ones that you can easily work into your monthly bills.

Just don’t feed dog food, thinking that somehow that’s going to be more better.:goldfish:
