all of the above covered. When I found him at the lfs, he was in a tank with grass shrimp and that's it. I don't know what possessed me to look, but I noticed his tail up by a powerhead. I asked the employee if he knew what was in there and he said no. He poked around a little bit and the butterfly came out. So even at the LFS in a tank with no mates, and very minimal cover he was hiding. He's hid ever since I got him (about 2.5 years ago) He's grown and eats crickets like crazy. That's the only time he comes out of hiding. Granted he's the only one i've ever owned, so it could be just this particular fish.
