Can I get some ideas on setting up a discus tank for a 240gal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
wow that's a lot of great info.

thanks guys.

so i guess i have more than enough filtration, I just need a bigger sump and doing an RO system is too much work. I want a simple setup so if there is an emergency with the equipment and i'm not there, I want my parents to be able to fix the problem. they are old and i don't want to teach them something too complex that they won't remember it when things happen.

i already have 160gal rubber barrels so i guess i can age my water in that.

one thing i'm concerned about is power outages. in Los Angeles, sometimes we have rolling blackouts that can last up to 5-12 hours which occured about 2 months ago when i use to have monster fish. it didn't kill any of my fish but i'm assuming they are much hardier than discus.

so my question is do you guys think that a blackout would hurt the discuss?

i know my wet/dry bio balls will dry out but i don't know about my fx5. all three media trays in my fx5 is filled with ceramic rings only. when a blackout occurs, the water in my fx5 stays in the canister. does this mean that the beneficial bacterial in my canister will still be alive after a few hours of no electricity?

just make sure that there are valves on the lines connecting the tank to the plumb work and it should stop any backflow and overfilling.
if blackouts are such a big issue, why not get a generator? at least one big enought to power just the fish tanks' filtrations/aeration.

i'm not worried about things flooding. i have valves and stuff. i'm just worried about the beneficial bacteria dying.

a generator is something i'm planning on getting but i just wanted to know what will happen if i didn't have a generator.

well the bio balls would probably dry out a little bit but the water left in the bottom of the sump SHOULD keep like 1/3 to 1/2 of the bateria alive. the one's in the gravel and on tank decorations would still be alive too. so if one happens just be sure to keep up on the water changes.
do you have a FW test kit?

Weene, you rock!

Also, Awesum, if you go with the 80 gallon sump instead of the 30, you can add a couple or 3 more Discus...:headbang2

yea i have a FW test kit. i guess i shouldn't be too worried about it.

i do need to upgrade my sump.

thanks for the input guys.

That is very cool! I never really thought of that, When I go to LFS's the rummys always look albino. In my tank there noses are like Stoplights! Gues i've got good water for my discus's

I never thought of it either:) We just noticed it over time. I agree, I think it's awesome and wouldn't mind having shoals of Rummynoses in ALL my tanks...
