Especially if you have large tanks or any tank for that matter, that may not get enough water circulation in areas. I like the hydor koriallia line (not sure if thats the spelling) but any good pump really would work.
In fact, and I dont do this, but i think it would be great for our freshwater fish if one employed wave maker units tied to multiple pumps like saltwater tank keepers do. I think that might provide good exercise and dead-spot prevention. Besides in rivers and lakes i'm sure there are water surges and variable currents.
The pumps I use point directly at the surface, to add in circulation near the top.
