I have a 5'' Rotkeil Severum and a 3-4'' Female Jack dempsey with 5 silverdollars in a 75 gallon. Can I add a salvini cichlid to this tank? I've always loves salvini growing up as a kid in the fish hobby with my dad for the past 15 yrs, but never got the chance to keep one for a bit, I had one as a kid for 5 months that died during a tornado in Florida, and techinically it was my dad's but he handed it to me the week before it passed.
Anyways, what do you think? I want to get a female, but my lfs has just 2-2.5'' specimens in stock. How do I tell a female at that size?

I'd try it, you can always take it back out of the tank if you have problems.

You could add a female just be aware females can be a little evil. The way I've heard to find a female is look and see if the dorsal fin has black on it.uploadfromtaptalk1404317542981.jpguploadfromtaptalk1404317634627.jpg
Here's my female

I guess I will get 1 or 2 of them tomorrow. The lfs guy said he thinks females have the orange bellies, but none of them in the tank had orange yet.
So I guess I'll post pics asking if they are female.

I wouldn't do it with a severum. Salvini are evil little things.

I wouldn't ..thats gonna be really crowded for the level of aggression a sal will bring... go grab a 40 b from the petco $ sale and drop the sal in that ... just my 2 cents,, good luck

I wouldn't risk your rotkeil to salvini aggression. I had one that would bully a texas cichlid that was about twice its size. Mine was a female and she was an absolute she-devil. I wouldn't want my rotkeil to have to deal with any added stress. Plus once all of your fish grow I think you'll be a little over stocked as is.

Why add the aggression to your tank? Sals are small but they pack a punch and on top of that when your existing fish mature you will be over the limit on your tank size (over stocked IMO)
I personally don't think my tank is overstocked yet, but once things grow I will just keep the severum, jd, and dollars. I am going to pass on the sal instead and get some other kind of cichlid. Maybe a smaller jack or a peacuful cichlid.

I had the same warnings about salvini agression before I got one. I ended up getting one and it was more than worth it. Prettiest fish in my tank and worth the agression. uploadfromtaptalk1404347091276.jpg
