The only "true" piranhas are the Pygocentrus species.
If a Wimpel piranha is not "really" a piranha, then it can be argued strongly that the entire Pristobrycon species are not really piranha either.

I like to believe the Wimpel is a smaller, cuddly version of it's cousins. Still a piranha, but small and cute and able to hang out in a 30 gallon.

until very recently catoprion mento was NOT considered a piranha due to differences in dentition but recently through genetic reaserch it was found out that if the piranha clade is to be monophyletic (consisting of all the descendants of a given ancestor (or ancestors in this case) it should be restricted to serrasalmus, pygocentrus and part of pristobrycon (excluding pristobrycon striolatus, pygopristis and catoprion) OR be expanded to include all species traditionaly called piranhas as well as catoprion.

Either way the reaserch indicates that pristobrycon striolatus needs to be moved to different genus due to differences in genetics

all of that paraphrased from David Schleser's (Sp?) newer version of the piranha book
