Can I have these fish in my tank? please advise

a tank that size, i would do 5-6 oscars...they are very lethargic only expending energy at feeding time...grow them out and it will be a good looking tank

if not, i would do oscars, Green terrors, severums, convicts, plecos...this combination has worked for decades....

That's to many oscars in that size tank. Only 2-3

If you're worried about fry, you can always go with a medium sized predatory catfish as a tankmate. You shouldn't have any really even make it past egg stage.

Trust me, most people who end up with oscars dont really keep them their entire lifespan where they are capable of hitting 12"+, these commercially bred oscars dont reach that size because they max out around 8-10" and when they do get to that size, they usually end up in a LFS....its sad but true

so 2-3 oscars in a tank that big is overkill

Unless, he wants to keep the fish all their life...but either way...good luck

Lol well that was one of the more ignorant things I've heard in a while. So your telling him to get 7+ oscars because your assuming he's just going to get rid of some? Ok good advice because how would I know

- i did not ever say 7+ oscars, please read my post in its entirety
- i only told him/her what can be kept in a tank that size
- i am not being ignorant but stating the simple fact with oscars....one of most abused fish in this hobby simply because of its puppy dog nature
- i also gave the person credit stating "IF" he/she wants to keep the fish their entire lifetime which me/you would never know and wished them good luck (again read my post in its entirety)

i guess you can just call people ignorant by reading between the lines, its that easy...isnt it......anyways...if you wish to give some non-ignorant advice then by all means you can....i rest my case

Exactly, so why would you tell someone they could keep "5-6 at that size" when we all know when they grow larger (which does not take long with oscars) there will be no room and the fish will die or the OP will be forced to rehome?

-if aquascaped properly a 175 would be comfortable for 5-6 Oscars
-it will help reduce conspecific aggression
-Oscars by nature are very lazy and they are not active swimmers which would require large swimming area, they like to hover around as adults only acting up during feeding time...(i believe i mentioned this in my OP response)

Ok well I respect your opinion although I completely dissagree with it. I hate when people lose their cool and have arguing matching on threads like these when it is unecessary. Thank you for your input. Hopefully the OP will make a decision he sees best

One last thing, I really don't want to deal with fry, any signs of gender I could search for when picking the fish up to prevent the oscars breeding or anything I could do to stop them breeding later on?

Don't add convict then, they breed like rats. Also, the Oscar will not lay if there's tank mates, especially another cichlid.
