I have a 210gal display tank and a 75gal sump. I was looking at running the canister filter on the return end of the sump. Basically I want to pump the water out of the return end and run it through the canister and back into the return end of the sump. From there the return pump bring it back to the tank. The reason is my sump is int he basement ans the tank is on the 1st floor a above the sump. I hate to have to buy a big pump to pump up the the 1st floor.

Will this work fine?

wow you plumbed your sump all the way down to the basement?

How is attaching a cannister to your sump going to allow you to not have to have a huge pump?A massive pump would be required to get the water all the way back up stairs and still maintain a decent flow rate.

Do you have the sump already running on the tank?

I assume your talking about the cannister taking water out of the last chamber in the sump and returning it there before it is carried back up to the tank?

Thing is if your sump is doing its job the water in the last chamber should be ammonia and nitrite free, containing only nitrates, which aren't going to be removed by a cannister filter.

I'm having a hard time picturing all this but it doesn't sound like the most effective setup.

With a 75 gallon sump on a 210 gallon tank you should have enough space to pack more than enough biomedia to eliminate ammonia and nitrite given that the tank is not grossly overstocked, eliminating the need for the additional cannister filter unless you are wanting it for mechanical, which in that case it would need to be attached directly to the tank itself.

I have a similar set up for a tank of my own, with the sump being in the basement. if you wanted to run the canister on the sump you should make sure the canister is run on a part of the sump where the water level in the sump is above the top of the canister (obviously the canister is outside of the sump but still below water level). and try to make the tubing on the intake as short as possible so the canister will run at its most effective gph., but youre output tube can be put anywhere in the sump.

and why would you do this?

well i just re-read your post and I'm confused now. pretty much if you want your sump in the basement you'll need to spend a decent amount of money on a quality pump that has a decent head height.

oh i run the canister just as extra filtration and so i can put different media in there that i wouldn't want just floating around my sump (carbon for example)

Wow..... ok, I had to read that like 5 times. A canister, no matter what size, will NOT pump water from the sump (basement) to the tank (1st floor). That's like 9-14'. You'll need something with a bit more umph. No getting around it.

I already have the sump in the basement and it's running fine. I want to use the canister filter so I can polish the water. I have a 25micon cartridge in the canister. By running in and out return chamber, then I can use a smaller pump and polish the water before it gets returned to the tank.

Will this work?
