That will not work. Running anything inline with the primary pump will not work. You never can run two pumps inline, you have to have them separate. Adding one for mech, as stated, will not do much in a sump, or anywhere after the overflow, unless it is an inline RO chamber, with no pump. Any canister you want to use for mech filtration will need to be on the tank itself.
I already have the sump in the basement and it's running fine. I want to use the canister filter so I can polish the water. I have a 25micon cartridge in the canister. By running in and out return chamber, then I can use a smaller pump and polish the water before it gets returned to the tank.
Okay if you already have this sump running than you already have a massive pump?Werent you saying you wanted to avoid having to use a large pump?That part is unavoidable.May I ask what pump your using to pump water all the way back upstairs and maintain a decent flow rate?
If you use felt in the last stage of the mechanical filtration in your sump than it will polish your water.
Can you get pics of this setup?If not no biggy,I think the conclusion remains that you should save your money and skip the cannister.
why not just set the canister to pull water from your "out" bin in the sump and then just dump it right back in.. since you already have the sump doing all the major filtration the canister is just there for polishing it wouldnt need to filter every single drop of water on every cycle...
im just making up numbers here.. but lets say yer sump does 6 cycles per hour... the canister would end up doing like 4 or so...

thats what i told you i did yesterday it works fine all your doing is help clean and or polish the water befor it rturns to your tank via. the main pump
think every one got confusd thinking you where trying to run your return with just the canister. it works great my daughters tank is cystal clear
we just filled the FX5 with puragin and padding.
