I have a retiulated stingray housed in a 125 gallon tank who is as happy and healthy as can be. I have had her for a couple of months by herself and am starting to look at getting her a tankmate or two.

At first I wanted to house a tiger oscar with her but I saw some very nice gar at my LFS and I really want one now. I have not seen much about stingrays and gars together so I wanted to hear what the gar experts had to say...

From the little research I've done the parameters for both seem to be simular but I also heard gars can be aggresive and I do not want anything to happen to my ray.

yea I was also considering another ray since they always seem to get along especially in a 125 they have plenty of room they are just a little pricey I adopted mine.

the gars are about 8" and are only $25 at my LFS

They can be mixed depending on what type of gar it is. I would first correctly ID the type of gar before even thinking of putting in the tank with your ray.

maybe.

a certain gar horder tried and the gar killed it

You should be fine. I have a couple of gars and they don't bother any one. The only thing is that if another fish has food in their mouth and the gar smells it, the gar will try to get it. Other then that there calm fishes. For sure don't get an Oscar cause it seems like they just want to fight with everyone

I believe that was attributed to a pack of tropical gars plus a Florida gar or two mixed in for good measure. :grinno:

Generally, gars of the genus Lepisosteus are much more compatible than gars of the genus Atractosteus.

i remember seeing someones ray(might of been a motoro) trying to eat anything/the gar. i guess it would depend on the size of each fish.
