Can I increase flow rate on wet/dry with hob overflow?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Will I'd have to offer him more like a keg of beer and round trip airfare to deliver it for me! The tank is in Orlando, 8 hours away. ;) My husband is picking it up right now (he's there w family) This tank was a really good deal, very nice Oceanic stand/canopy and 5ft long, exactly what I was looking for. I didn't want to pass up on and I figured while the hub was there he might as well make himself useful. . . . .

Thanks cchhcc. I said 10x turnover only because people on various cichlid forums say cichlids are pretty messy and 10x for the tank was a good rule of thumb. Either way, sounds like I'm off to a good start in the filtration dept.

no such think as to much turnover.. only to much flow.. as long as the fish are not getting blown around the tank you are good.. yes you can over do it.. but thats not really a bad thing..

to keep from flooding the house just be sure to drill a hole just below the water line on the pump line.. that way if you lose power the syphon will be broken before (in theory) the sump overfills/floods the house..

the water level in the overflow will take care of itself so dont worry about that..
the water level in the sump is the one that matters.. when you first start it up have a bucket ready to add more water if you need to..
the tank will only hold water till it hits the overflow level.. then it will "overflow" to the sump..

once you get it setup and running you will go "o.. duh.. why was i trying to make this so hard"... the only "hard" part is figuring out how much water to keep in the sump.. too little and it will evaporate while you are at work/asleep (the pump will run for a long time it will just make a lot of noise while it "sucks" air and water.. to much water and if you lose power the sump could overflow when the pump stops (this is where the hole in the pump line comes into play)

Trying to visualize fish being blown around, like in a whirlpool. Kindof funny but guess it could happen. :)

Good idea about the hole. . .do you mean drill a hole on the outflow (the return from the sump?) I'll definately do that. . .we loose power here frequently, especially during hurricane season.

Nope, the hole goes on the intake.

But with many HOB overflows that is unnecessary. For Tube PVC overflows it is though. But there are so many different variations of the same device, so it may depend.

ie,

Not for this kind:

But yes for this kind:

Oh. Tx for the pics. The hob overflow is like the 1st pic. So no hole necessary to prevent flooding if I have that type? So much to learn. . .

ummm.. no.. none of what will just said...

the pump line (sump/pump ---> tank).. if the outlet (where the water comes out) is below the water level and you lose power it will syphon BACK to the sump (aka go backwards) untill the syphon is broken.. if no hole is drilled that means it will syphon the tank till it sucks air by draining the tank (and flooding the sump/house)... UNLESS you drill a hole just below the water line...

ignore the beard algae.. however i just noticed that clump.. maybe that has something to do with why i cant get rid of it... hmm...

anyway.. thats the pump line (from the sump to the tank) .. the hole is about an inch below the water line.. when i lose power/turn it off .. the pump syphons water out of the tank to the sump but only till that hole is exposed to air then the syphon is broken..

drilling a hole in the overflow below the surface just sets your waterlevel lower.. its an OVERFLOW it allows water to go down it when it is over your desired water level.. when the pump is shut off.. theres nothing to OVERFLOW.. it takes care of itself and is self restarting (if you have it done right.. the ones pictured are self-restarting)

enjoy the glitter text :)

Diggin the glitter text. . .no mistaking where where the hole goes.:D

ps. . .can I borrow you guys when I set up my tank? Planning a trip to FL anytime soon?

i will never go to florida ever again.. unless someone dies.. and even then im going to be extra not happy about it simply because its florida....

however were not the only ones that know what were talking about.. so go right ahead and keep asking questions.. just be sure to post pics cuz then its all worth it

Haha! What's wrong with Florida?

i lived there for 2 years.. worst 2 years of my life...

it cost me over 2k to get my drivers license back after living in florida.. i never once drove a car in florida.. i got pulled over on a BIYCLE.. when i went to court for the 3rd time to try to deal with the ticket and they still had no paperwork for me the judge said "ehh.. i wouldnt worry about it"... i did have to worry about it.. 3 years later when i lived 2000 miles away and was denyed a promotion which within a month also cost me my very easy, stress free, high paid job... after losing my job i had to fly to florida not once but twice to get this delt with.. this included serving 3 nights in jail... in the end i was told "yeah.. theres records of you showing up for courtdates but theres no other paperwork to go with them.. then you missed a date".... the date i missed was almost a year after the judge told me "not to worry about it"....

my hate for the state of florida is 100% justifyed
