can i keep a bass in this

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Depending on the size Pbass you start with, species, food, water quality, and quantity you could keep a few Pbass happy in a 150 for about a yr maybe a lil more.

i thought the monster rule was 1 inch per 5 or 10 gallons?

First ive heard of that rule lol. But yeah 5 gallons per inch once the fish go beyond 6 inches would be awesome. But 10 gallons per inch? That would be fantastic but we all know that we all have an addiction to these fish...we would need 10,000 gallons of fish boxes in our houses to hold what we want, and thats just for growouts

IMO they can be kept in it until a foot long.
but any larger and its pushing the limit.

I agree and am at the limit right now. It's not that they can't stay safely in this condition. The problem I am seeing is during water changes. The bigger pinima FREAK out when the water level is low and usulally cause themselves injury or injure the others when the freak out. SO this would be the numer one reason why any longer then a year would probably lead to some issue's as well as unwanted stress in your cichla. ;) For the record I walk past my empty 240gL every night and think it's not big enough and the sad part is I know this to be very true. So even advising anyone to get one for life time housing is really not advisable. For those of us that are serious about keeping these cichla for a long period of time. I think a 400gL (L= LONG) would be more in the ball park that we should be shooting for in the long run. And this should be the bare minimum. Of course a 350g would work but how many of us are truly keeping just one Cichla or Cichlid with any of our big boys? Not many! ~Just from my own experince!~ And glass is not the way to go for sure try and always do acrylic trust me take the advice now or pay for it later.

Why no glass?

The energy and force a thrashing 2' Cichla can make with enough swimming room will crack or break imo.. I have an acrylic tank there in now and they will be moving to the glass tank very soon. I have seen and heard some thing's go on in the 150g that has me covinenced that I am going to be really on borrowed time while there in the GLASS 240g.I entened to house my dovii and other cichlids I have in it for life. It's temporary for the Cichla at least for a year and half. I can only imagine what the Male or Female Pinima can do with the extra swimming room. It's worse then a 14lb softball. More like a bowling ball with attitude! :nilly: I am not saying you can't do it. But if you don't have to do it then why not just exclude the problem of coming home to 240g of water in the fish room or living room and a total lost of your collection just because one 2' fish plays a little rougher then the rest of the children. And again were talking long term housing here so I am thinking about when they hit 3' in an indoor aquarium.:D Also I have kids to think about also so glass and kids don't mix very well. ;) Especially four boy's.

Im just weeks away from buying a 300g wide for my four 6 inchers, and I allready made the choice to go acryllic if for nothing else than weight. Its a little odd but the tank will have to be stood almost vertically on end to get it in the room its going in. 96L x 30w x 24h. Do the math on 3/4 inch plate glass and thats one heavy fish box. Not to mention the danger of having to handle that much glass in an odd way. Wanted to do 96 x 36 x 30 but I wouldnt even be able to get it in my house :irked:

I didnt even go there. My 240g is HEAVY way to heavy for your average person. When moving it in at one point I had to hold it by myself through the door way and MAN 380 lbs aint light on anyday. I dont care how many wieght's you lift. If your not in a stable situation then go acrylic your friends will thank you.

Nice pickup Venom. Acrylic is the way to go for sure my 150 is acrylic and the 350 I am getting soon is also acrylic. I will never buy glass with anything more then 150g. I only got the 240gl because you can't find them every where with that with and lenght in primo condition. And the 8' 2' was a plus.

Mustang sorry for derailing your thread a bit but in a nut shell you won't have long in the 150g. That's what my P's are in now and I am working hard to get my bigger tanks up and running just for the quality of my fish if nothing else.
