Can I Keep a Few Cardinal Tetras in with My Cichlids?

All of my cichlids are juvies, and so I was wondering if I could keep a few young cardinal tetras in with them?

Different water temp. and pH levels are required for both fish.

Cichlids= 79-82 temps, pH=above 8
Tetras= 76-79 temps, pH=around 6

unless we're talking about some very small cichlids (rams), your tetras will quickly be eaten

OK-- I was actually told it was a bad idea from the LFS, but I wanted a 2nd opinion.
