Can i keep fry in this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh also another concern is that you can't keep it on the floor with much sucess. When people or animals are above the water level in their tank cichlids get really freaked out for obvious reasons lol. Also it is hard to siphon water at ground level.

I just thought it would be important to mention it, if you did use it it would work better above waist height. The 55 I made is setting on milk crates which are surprisingly strong : )

interesting. yes i will keep them at a good height. So..how long you guys think i can house newly born fry in that box lol?

I would test and cycle the container with a single feeder goldfish. Do it a few weeks before you need it for the fry. I'm gonna try it with my next convict batch. :)

I've seen fry kept in a bucket before until they were large enough to go into a small tank. Granted, with a big rubbermaid or something he might have kept them in there longer.

I raise fh fry, 10 gal but not for long. They get aggressive fairly quickly. It will depend on how you care for them as this will be the factor in growth rate. I do 10 gal 1-2 month, 30 gal 1-2 month, then 55 gal. They outgrow these tanks fast, produce alot of waste, and become aggressive. I would suggest using a few containers to improve the water quality. Daily water changes and the right food will increase the growth rate.

When dealing with growing out FH grow outs, the bigger the tanks, the better. I never grow out any of my fry in anything smaller than a 40gallon. When dealing with small tanks/containers for grow outs, waste builds up quickly. So you will have to do large daily water changes to reduce the build up of uneaten food/waste. Also, all fry will try to kill each other. The strong will pick off the weak. In a smaller container, the chances of more of them dying from their siblings is higher.

If you grow them out in a lets say, a 55. You don't have to do as much water changes since theres more water to "dilute" waste. Theres also more room for the weaker ones to escape the stronger ones. Plus, doing large water changes in such a small container will prove to be really stressful for the fry because you run the risk of sucking them up with the gravel vac.. If you really have to use the small container, I would not use it for more than a week.

you should just get those rubbermaid 100g tubs.. that way u dont have to transfer them so often

Please keep updating this thread though if you end up using it. I would like to know if this kind of tub is nontoxic because they are cheaper. I always need cheap things to raise fish in lol

Certainly I will keep this updated. I find this is much easier than using a tank. I can literally lift this entire thing with full water in it and move it around wherever I see convenient. However, I will be doing 50% water changes to all my tanks this weekend, and move my male SRD next to my female to see the reaction.

However, winter is almost here and I heard fish don't usually breed during this time, so I want to make this quick, and start raising the fry. My friend's property is almost done, another 1-2 months, then I will be setting up breeding tanks.

Question: What test fish should I use for this tank? I was thinking of getting some guppies or mollies? However, I guess I would have to return them to the pet shop, because I do not want to risk feeding my FH or cichlids feeders.

So, do I need filtration for this 1-2 months? or a heater and air pump is enough? Thanks.

You should got to petsmart and buy some cheap cichlid what ever the cheapest and if they die return them and get your money back. The reason is because they will be closer to the type of fish you will placing in their. Also I used a kiddy pool the ones for 15 to grow out my cichlids from walmart.

Unfortunatley there is no Pet Smart in Australia. However, I am pretty tight with the dude at the LFS and will borrow some fish :)

However,I may not need to go through with this after all if my mate gets the new property tomorrow ;D
