Can i keep my RTC for life?????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i personally think you could keep him in a tank of that size. Is it the best ??? no. But i think u could keep him in it. Most ppl will say nothing less than 1000 gallons.

I was wondering if i could keep a current 12" RTC in a 72x45x24 pond for like it works out around 350gal, i know about tankmates being food i can prepare for that i was thining that there arent many RTC past 30" and if i got him that big hes still have 15" turning room. What you guys think?

in my opinion it sounds fine to keep him in that kind of dimensions...as what many says most don't get past 30" but some still can reach that point and pass it. ;) It should works also because i think Necrocanis or someother with a RTC x TSN hybrid in a Cattle Trough which i believe is 360 gallons round. but it was a round container. But still you give him some turning room which is good for the matter. Lets just see what others have to say about this and we'll give you the concluding answer to your question :)

yeah i know what you mean... im in the same situation. Ive got a 12 incher and im debating on what to do... hes in a 72x24x25 right now and thinking an indoor pond maybe.

you could for a long time but not for life i don't think a 4 foot fish would be very happy in a tnak that 6 feet long but you could keep it in there for a long time RTC don't shoot around alot like TSNs do sometimes RTC tend to move pretty slow unless scared

What you need to look at is if its 30" it has no swimming space at all. only just over double its length. Not really fair on the fish just another reason why RTC shouldnt be mass bought by lfs.

I hate to say it, but I don't think that even Bogwoodbruce could keep an RTC for life..... I'd have to say I think it would be stunted :(

Most don't get beyond 30" ???? I'm afraid that ALL RTC's will get well beyond 30" with reasonable care if they don't they are stunted. I keep my RTC's in a 16' dia pond and they are both well over 40". My oldest RTC I kept for over 27 years. Life with a RTC often means your life.
The answer to your question is no ...you can't keep a RTC in there for life.
Get yourself one of THESE and then your in with a chance.
