Thats what i was thinking.Jeox;1824212; said:Not really.
but if you think about it, do you think it would get anything better if you returned it to the lfs?

All i have to say isdragonfish;1824645; said:Not sure that it would do for life but as stated, much better than 90% of the ones sold. On the plus side, the large size gives you more time to plan and build an even larger pond.![]()

Thankslophius;1824827; said:my last redtail grew from <1" to 37" in 16 months - I initially kept it in a 4ft x12"x15" tank for about 2 months until it got to about 6" - it then moved to a 84"x30" x 30" for about 6 months until I moved it at about 14" to my 10ft x 3ft x 3ft - that tank was about 600 galls I think.
I think that the 10ft tank would probably have been pretty close to the mark for keeping a redtail for life - although I was amazed that mine was still growing (rapidly) - I would suggest that most could have been kept in that tank. Mine was a wild caught fish and I suspect that there may well be differences between those wild caught and those farmed for food / ornamental trade - most that you see are from the latter.
I reckon Bruce that you have a good 18 months to 2 years at least for keeping your fish in your pond - probably even more if you control the diet - don't forget its a pretty decent size pond that you've got there - you'll have to judge when it looks too small - my 37" redtail was about 12" across at the widest - I think the dimensions of your pond are about as good as you could want really with the width being almost 4ft.
If i were you i'd keep him, enjoy him and plan to move him to something bigger in the future.
