Can I Keep Polypterus Senegalus with Rope Fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, since your bottom area of the tank is gonna be pretty full with all those ropes and the Senegal, I'd try and full out the top a bit. Maybe African butterfly fish, some rainbows. I wouldn't get too much since you don't want to pack to many fish in there. How about your filtration? What are you going to run, and how often do you plan on doing water changes?

I feel like Rainbows would be out of place there. African Butterfly Fish sounds ok.

I plan on getting either 1 Fluval C4 or two Fluval C3s... are those ok?
10% weekly water changes are what I do in my planted tanks. This is my first tank with fish above 6 inches so will I need to increase the water changes?

Also, maybe a half beak, although i don't know much about them. Or a leaf fish. I'm just trying to stick with oddballs since that s what you mentioned. I'm pretty sure all the knifes will eventually get too big for a 55, although I'm sure it has been done. Maybe abgk, but again, they can get 10-14", and you gotta fight the urge to put to many fish in there. What about inverts? There's some really cool crayfish out there.

I ascribe to the idea that the more water changes the better. I try and do 50% every 2-3 days. But i unfortunately an overstocked at the moment. Trying to thin my herd, but I'm swamped with babies atm. The butterfly would be cool with the bichirs, what if you did that and tried to find one of the nicer crayfish? Google cherax sp. And you'll see some really nice ones

I would do 20-25% water changes every week personally...
As far as fish, you have a ton of options...

Burmese Archers
Distochodus Sexfasciatus
Indian Sheathfish KRYTOPTERUS APOGON
Royal Clown Knife
Peacock Bass (Temporary)
Vulpinnis
Cynodon Gibbus
Uaru
Geophagus Daemon

I'm sure I could go on, but I'm kinda fried today :)

Not the biggest fan of invertebrates, but the Cherax sp do look very pretty! Will probably get the butterfly, though that takes out the options of fin nipping fish right.
