Can I keep polypterus?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I replied to the other thread first by accident so I'll post what I put on their:depending on what species you get (anything other than a senegal or moke) unless you get them small you're going to have some problems with the bichirs trying to eat them. They are just too small right now maybe around 3"-4" they'd be better off with bichirs. With ropes though since they have a smaller mouth it'll be a chore to eat either, but definitely still possible so Id watch out for that. I would basically say if the swords and corys are your main fish Id wait a little longer to introduce bichirs, also even if bichirs are your main fish Id still either wait or remove both as the corys can do major damage if the polys eat them the wrong way.

They will go from 4-6 inches in less than 2 months, depending on diet. Poly's are great fish. Senegalus make for a great introduction. I bought two senegalus not really knowing much about them on my 18th birthday, 8.5 years ago. That started me off down the path to monster fish keeping. Of the two, one is still alive and is now at 11.5". The other jumped out of his 40g breeder while I was setting up his 180g home. He didn't make it. I was devastated. Senegalus have vibrant personalities. They're like little manatee dragons. I love the little guys.

If you really want bichirs I would remove the cories just to be safe. I have a senegal and have black skirt tetra and he often nips at them at feeding time (luckily they are fast enough to avoid him) so I'll just be cautious especially in the cories.

+1

Forgot to echo that the present stock will eventually be eaten. When they get close enough to try, you could separate the smaller fish. The polys will make much better pets IMO. :p

Ok thanks! Will a bichir eat my snails? The swordtails were just fish from my ten gallon that I used to cycle the 125 with, so I don't care if they get eaten. I can re home the cories . Btw neither of those are my main fish. those are the angelfish and Rams!

Not currently but I could set it up. I was planning to move them to my 29 gallon at work. That's where I put all of my grumpy fish. It currently has one angelfish, a kissing gourami (temporary), a common goldfish (temporary) a bn pleco and 4 cories. I don't have any equipment to set up the ten gallon

Snails i have found get picked at until the bichirs kill them or rip them out and eat them. Ive tried mystery and rabbit snails.

It will depend on if you get an "adventurous eater" even for the angels. Most will leave them alone, but I had a senegal that decided that one of the angels looked tasty and by gosh he was going to see for sure! Took an 8" tall angel on a death roll when he was only about 6-1/2" long. He moved to the 90 that same day, but it was too late for that angel. The little bugger had shredded him before I could even think about getting the net. The other two senegals never even looked at the angels, they stayed in the tank until they were nearly 10 inches.
