I have a standard 55 gallon tank. I am interested in getting 3 RBP and would like to know if this tank size is suitable to keep them in for their whole lives without upgrading to a bigger tank? Thanks

Some people say 29 gallons for one piranha, and some say 20 gallons for one piranha. You can keep three but your aquarium will be overstocked, get good filtration and do water changes weekly and you'll be fine.

Do you think it would be severely overstocked or doable? I already planned on doing weekly water changes and will have two filters running. The tanks footprint is 48x12. Will that give adequate room for the RBP to turn around? This is what is holding me back from getting them until I know for sure they can fit and not have to upgrade. Online I see many 55g tanks with 3 RBP in them but I don't know if that is just a temporary tank

Look u do the math 20 gallons for a single RBP but u want three which is better then keeping two as the dominate one will bully the weaker one. I think it's doable. Piranhas grow to about 13 inches they grow 1-2 inches a month until they hit the 6 inch mark after that their growth slows down and when they hit the 9 inch mark then they grow less then an inch each year.
what I suggest is that get some drift wood and a few live plants, to make the environment good looking. And it helps reduce stress. Get juveniles though. As they are cheaper and this way they have more space. Do water changes weekly and you'll be fine. You can check there's a piranha information thread over here which I wrote. You can check. It's not so good but something

How do you think a fish of potentially reaching 12" is ok in a 20 gallon? Also Piranhas can grow much bigger than ur acclaimed 13" . 3 in a 55 gallon for life is just ridiculous.

I agree 12 inch fish in a 20 gallon is just madness

Hi rajatariqmustafa15, sorry, but i fin dit a bit wrong when you write a info page on Piranha, but to ask advice on keeping them, then the next day you offer advice, and to offer advice that a RBP to be ok for life in a 20g tank. Please think first, not just read and repeat what you read, its not all good or true what you read on the net.

Sorry not wide enough, they get to big, the 12 inch wide is no way wide enough. IMO 4x2 foot print would be better only just for 3 fully grown as they get 9 inch in short time, so you want growth room for the other 3 inch they will get.
Been there and done it ;) filter are ok though, good filtration is what is needed as they are messy beggers.

We'll man I'm not arguing with you but let me just prove my point that I'm right.
And they do grow to about 12-13 inches.
