nope wimple piranhas, also known as Catoprion mento are illegal in HI.

HAWAII

Serrasalmo (all species in genus), Serrasalmus (all species in genus).

looks like pygopristis, and pristobrycon genera are still legal, although I'm sure there may be another law banning them. Call your local fish and wildlife office and ask about the aforementioned genera.

are there any legal equivalents to pygocentrus-type piranhas (non-solo)?

they gotta be shoal-friendly and fair sized (12" or less). carnivores with nice teeth. not $50 per fish (which dealers are aware u GOTTA buy 10+ anyway...) atleast able to shred crickets and not look like swimming dog****... u know, the ideal fish appearances.

i love how nitwitts on yahoo always say pacu... those fish are nothing like piranha, just a vegan red belly in a fat suit that got punched in the face...

exodons? not sure if they are legal or not, but 20-30 or them ina tank looks badass

yeah thats about it.

or you could drop the whole macho fish thing and go with silver dollars. I think they're cool looking. Some of the lesser know pacu species would be cool too. You ever kept piranhas before? They might not be what your expecting. Those vegan pacu are probably a good deal more outgoing and active than your average piranha.

man if i could comfortably keep piranhas i would be enjoying them with you guys right now instead of trying to find alternatives... its like a soy diet!!

no i havent kept piranhas but know several people who do. piranhas are hundreds to thousands of dollars cheaper to keep than pacus (since you can fit a decent shoal in a 100g for life) they come out to chomp and go back to do whatever they were doing and i actually like the fact that some hide in the bog wood. it gives them that "lurker" aspect that active fish dont have like oscars who basically always show themselves like "oh hi! im gonna eat you! get ready!" to small prey. then in the blink of an eye it gets anticlimactically sucked into its mouth...

ive been lookin into exodons on the other characin forums. im trying to broaden my options even further tho on this piranha forum. the pygopristis etc seem really nice!

i already have cool "looking" fish that do nothing, so silver dollars wont be my thing. i think all fish look cool in their own way, i even like to look at my overstocked guppy tank sometimes :). but i need some sort of better predator to fit these certain needs

but i don't have a 20 ton tank id need for a full grown pacu. nor am i able to pay that weight in $$ for one...

talk to padro on aqua ascape or george from shark aquarium they can ship some piranhas to you i really dont know if they have exodons but you can ask them they can probally find some for you

id get piranhas if i knew i wouldn't get caught in the process >_<
id love to see pygopristis being legal here and also exodons for $5 a piece or less..

ive always been confused with gov. names on forums... sorry, dont know em.. whats their forum name?

as a matter of fact, ive noticed that despite their legality, people who i know personally ordered piranhas online and had them shipped without problem! what gives? though successfully obtaining them after shipping was another story... but shouldn't dealers be more wary of where they are shipping their merchandise to????

they wouldn't ship piranhas to illegal states.
