Can I put a Oscar in with my JD?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Before i really knew anything about fish quite a few years ago i had a JD and an Oscar in a 55 together for 6 years and they were the best of friends and there was never any aggression in the tank what so ever. I also had amazing filtration mind you too and only a castle as decoration.

Now that i do know alot more, even though they got along great i still wouldnt recommend it because its mean to not have the proper space for them.

I had 2 Jack Dempseys .....and convicts in a 60 gallon tank, they were fine when I added the two young oscars but the oscars got big alot faster than the JDs and the jack dempseys were completely intimidated, they quit eating and stayed hidden....I ended up giving the JDs away.

Oscar growth rate is faster than JD.. A JD takes 1 year to mature to a good 5-6" size.. (Male only) Female takes a lot longer to me around that size..

I would def not put the two together unless ur tank is 75+ Gallon.. Also JD are very territorial fish.. and requires a large enough area..

I bought a JD and placed in the tank with my (4) 8 inch Oscars and JD was about 5 inches. The JD was so aggressive it was running all the fish. I immediately returned him to the store. JD's are not good tankmates. Also invested in "Aquarium Care of Oscars", by Neal Pronek and Brian M. Scott. Animal Planet sponsored book has great Oscar info.
