Can I Put Tiny Puffers In A 3.5 Gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You are smart to have figured out you can only keep 1 DP in your 3.5g tank. No salt is necessary.

I'm very surprised to hear Walmart is selling DPs. The only puffers I've ever heard of them selling are GSPs. Go to the Pufferpedia at my site & compare pics of the 2 species, to see what they are really selling.

Pufferpunk! I love your name, btw. I got a link off of your something, I think it was your signature... And I have been reading so much about these guys in the last 24 hours. Thank You!

Now maybe WalMart is NOT selling GSP's, please don't go by me. Here is a picture of Puffers I had in my 3 gal a long time ago. This IS a GPS, because he is spotted, right? Or do I have it backwards? And I should only put one in this tank even if they are so tiny.....

I've had 3 years with dwarf puffers...only 1 per 5 gallons of water...in this case 3.5 and lots of plants...very curious and get bored easily(they start to mope). they are too territorial to more into such a small tank. in larger tanks they to ok together PROVIDED there are lots of plants, wood, decor to stay out of eyesight from each other. keep the water clean, feed bloodworms and brine shrimp, and if you want the tank clean, put in 1-2 otocinlus cats. they and you will be much happier this way.

there are green spotted puffers-they grow to 6 inches and are brackish water. what you have in the picture is a dwarf puffer- the only true freshwater (don't even try brackish...it will kill them) puffer-they grow to a max of 1-1.5 inches. keep the water on the warmer side of the scale...i used 80 degrees...they were more active and no disease.

Thanks! To recap ~

I should only put one Dwarf Puffer in my 3.5 gal. Heat at 80, no salt. I am trying to get on to Pufferpunk's site but it is not liking me at the moment.

Pretty sure what you have in the pic above is indeed a dwarf puffer, since GSP's have a lot of circular black spots and a brighter green body tone...

DPs are definitely NOT the only true FW puffer.

Is the one in the pic like the one you have now? I didn't know Walmart was selling DPs.

I don't have one now. That is my tank that I will be using to GET one. If I can figure out which one to get without my head hurting.
