I think that they like to have a place to retreat to if they get scared, but i've seen many people with completely empty, bare-bottom tanks and lots of polys. I ask becuase i am considering removing both of my remaining driftwood caves. I had four, then gave away two and the tank looked bigger. I am still seeing my Gars get stuck in between the large piece i have and the front glass when they turn around, so i kind of want to get rid of the wood all together so they dont hurt themselves. Here is a pic of the small gap:

Also, whenever i take out the wood for just a bit, the whole gang seems more active. But do you guys think it would increase the aggression between them? Here are some pics of the tank with and without the wood. Which is better to you guys? More space, or decorations?

The Gar will get use to and learn its way around the tank. I have lots of plants and decor and hes learned perfectly his way around the tank. He actually even enjoys gonig behind my driftwood once in a while.
They look good in ur tank too.

Those aren't taking up much swimming space. I would leave them in. A bit of structure makes most fish feel safer.

Alright then. Im just worried about my bigger Gar mostly. He gets pretty caught up in there sometimes. But i guess eventually he will learn. I dont know how he hasnt yet after about 3 months around that wood :nilly:

Im sorry i also should have been more clear. The reason why i am thinking about removing them is for the Gars safety. not to maximize swimming space.

keep the wood,it looks loads better with it in and they are hardly huge pieces.
Nice set up by the way.

i dont have any caves or hiding places or wood in my tank, just sand and powerhead(sometimes they lay on top on my powerheads)
